Discover Your Values and Priorities

Values govern people’s life regardless if they are able to name the ones impacting them. Thanks to the values and priorities we are able to establish goals (staying with family or follow dream about adventures?), make short and long term decisions (should I get the job which will provide stable income or provide personal growth?), or selecting friends and partners (how important is it that a friend is honest?).

I propose to use three lists, which can be visualized as acting on a person from the different distances:

    • Internal for a person: Life Values – the deepest principles guiding the person behavior, e.g., integrity or honor. Life Values are “owned” by the person – no one can force the change or take these values away from the person unless they he or she decides to rule them out from their life.

    • In the closes vicinity: Life Priorities – the behaviors, emotions and goals that are the most important for a person in their private life, e.g., having and taking care of the family. Reaching priorities is not guaranteed, it may require some effort, and it can even fail due to some life circumstances.

  • General: Social Issues – the concerns and goals regarding the environment and society the person lives in, e.g., climate change.

Life Values
Values are the principles that help you to decide what is right and wrong, and how to act in various situations. They describe both who you are and who you want the people close to you to be. Values cannot be taken away from you, they characterize you and guide you through your life. It is only you who can decide if you want to live according to your values or to abandon them. For example if you value honesty then you can choose to be honest in all situation and nothing can prohibit you from doing so

Life Priorities
Life priorities are goals that you would like to achieve and which guide your behavior. You have to work to reach them, but it is not fully up to you if you succeed or fail in some way. And even if you realize your priorities, the fate or other people can still take them away from you, giving you a choice to fight or give up. E.g., if you value health and do everything to leave healthy, you can still lose it due to an illness or an accident.

Social Issues
Social issues are the factors of everyday life which you are most concerned with, impact you or your friends and family directly, or you think are most important for the society. Sometimes you are personally involved to reduce their presence and effect on the world, sometimes you just observe the development and effects.
